At just over 1200 kilometres long it was extensively used by the Roman Empire it was referenced as early as the Roman Republic, by writers who saw it as the outermost boarders of civilization. The Rhine had been and is still today an important waterway carrying goods and merchandise. The Rhine Gorge in the Area of Bingen and Bonn is a UNESCO world heritage site nicknamed the Romantic Rhine. It is a very deep area of the river and known for its many castles and vineyards.
