The approximately 2000 year old city is embraced by the rivers Rhine and Moselle. The Romans called it "Ad Confluentes" - "At the Confluence". The city is rich with history. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is a powerful witness to the past, all brought to life by the baroque old part of town, the castles and the extensive parks. At the famous German Corner, where the two rivers come together, the city's flair is matched by its hospitality. Moselle wine and excellent beers are suitable companions. During the summer months hundreds of passenger ships operate on the Moselle and Rhine.

The main eye-catcher is St. Paul's Cathedral, with one of the most lavishly decorated naves in Germany. You will also be delighted by the Prinzipalmarkt - lined by houses with pointed roofs and arched pathways, it is one of Europe's most beautiful inner-city squares. Don't miss the Town Hall, the St. Lamberti Church and the baroque architecture of J.C. Schlaun, including the Erbdrostenhof, St. Clemens Church and the Castle. Typical Westphalian cooking is served, for example, at the "Grosser Kiepenkerl" and "Kleiner Kiepenkerl" restaurants in the Kiepenkerl quarter.

Day 5: Bremen - Lübeck

You leave Bremen and after about 20 minutes arrive in the village of Worpswede. "Worpswede, Worpswede, Worpswede....it is a wonderland!" wrote Paula Becker enraptured in her diary in 1897. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke enthused about a "sky of indescribable variability and grandeur". Even today, artists and visitors interested in culture are still captivated by the charm of Worpswede and the sky over its sandy hill - the Weyerberg. Birch trees line the streets into the village, situated 25 km north-east of Bremen, in the midst of the expansive, picturesque Teufelsmoor (Devil's Moor) -River Hamme-lowlands. After Fritz Mackensen and his friends settled here in 1889, many artists followed. And still, the synthesis of art, culture, architecture and landscape in Worpswede creates a unique atmosphere.

Lubeck At the Untertrave. Copyright: GNTB/Schwarz,AstridFrom Worpswede, drive about 2 hours (178 km) to Lübeck. The silhouette is as unmistakable as its emblem is world-famous: Lübeck the "City of Seven Towers" with the Holsten Gate. Behind this imposing entrance you will find the former "Queen of the Hanseatic League", today a UNESCO cultural heritage site. In 1987 the entire Old Town was distinguished with this status: a work of art comprising over a thousand buildings ranging from Romanesque to modern styles that have been designated as protected historic monuments. Enjoy the culinary delights such as exquisite marzipan and a glass of "Rotspon", a special red wine.

Day 6: Lübeck - Rostock

Rostock Harbour After about 1.5 hrs (about 126 km), arrive in Rostock. One of Germany's most beautiful Hanseatic cities - where the Baltic Sea laps the shores of Mecklenburg/Western Pomerania and the air tastes slightly salty, where old-fashioned sailboats provoke nostalgic longings and where brick gables reach into the sky. Eight hundred years of history have shaped this "Gateway to the North".

Rostock has preserved much of the charm that it once possessed as the most important member of the Hanseatic League. The gabled houses dominating the skyline attest to this, as well as the imposing brick warehouses, massive gates and fortifications and awe-inspiring churches such as St. Peter's with its Gothic tower 117 meters high. They all bear eloquent witness to the wealth of the city's medieval merchants. After enjoying so much culture, sample Mecklenburg roast ribs with Rostock caraway seed schnapps.
